xTool published a new explainer for X1 LaserSwap on September 9. The company describes a shared galvo head connected to multiple sources. The platform starts with a 55W CO₂ laser and a built-in 20W diode source, with optional 5W UV, 60W MOPA and 30W fiber modules planned or offered as expansion paths.

This is more important than a long specification list. CO₂, diode, fiber, MOPA and UV sources interact with materials differently. A modular platform could let a shop add capabilities—clear-material cutting, metal marking, color marking or lower-heat UV work—without buying a complete standalone machine every time.

Buyer analysis: Ask what is included in the base price, which modules are shipping rather than merely announced, how swaps are calibrated, and whether extraction, rotary fixtures and software profiles work across every source. The economic test is total installed cost versus two or three specialized machines, including downtime if the shared chassis needs service.

2. LightBurn launches MillMage Pro—and signals features headed to LightBurn

On September 8, LightBurn Software announced MillMage Pro, adding V-carving, 3D relief carving and true nesting for CNC routing workflows. The official forum post also says Center Line Trace and Multi Page projects are available in MillMage 0.9, and that True Nesting, Center Line Trace and Multi Page support are coming to the next version of LightBurn.

For laser shops, true nesting can reduce material waste and setup time when producing batches. Multi-page project organization may also make it easier to manage product families, jigs and repeat jobs. LightBurn’s expansion into routing suggests that software vendors increasingly want to own more of the digital-fabrication workflow, rather than only the laser control step.

Buyer analysis: Do not upgrade for a roadmap promise alone. Test current features with your own files, controllers and production sizes. If nesting is central to your margin, compare yield on real sheet layouts and calculate the payback from saved material and operator time.

3. Kickstarter’s compact-laser wave enters its fulfillment test

Compact laser engravers remain active on Kickstarter, but September is less about launch excitement and more about delivery evidence. The Hanboost T1 campaign’s FAQ says shipping is planned to begin in September 2026, while the recently updated PicoLaser page shows a tiny, Arduino-powered open-frame engraver that exceeded its modest funding target.

  • OMTech: the brand continues to compete around established CO₂ and fiber platforms, value bundles and education rather than a fresh platform announcement this week.
  • Glowforge: the official blog’s recent visible activity remains primarily project inspiration and maker education.
  • Gweike: its newest indexed September content emphasizes UV glass engraving guidance, reinforcing education-led demand generation around specialized sources.

For shoppers, “no major launch” can be a positive signal to slow down. Mature machines may have deeper support libraries, proven consumables and known maintenance requirements. A new architecture may offer broader capability, but an established platform can be easier to price, service and integrate today.

Buy the workflow, not the wattage

A machine’s value now depends on source flexibility, motion system, camera and alignment, software maturity, material profiles, extraction and service. Wattage remains important, but it cannot tell you whether a job will be profitable or repeatable.

List the materials and jobs you expect during the next 12–24 months. Price the base machine, every required module, accessories, filtration, software, training and downtime. Compare that figure with dedicated machines that can run in parallel.

Demand evidence for future features and shipping dates

Roadmaps and crowdfunding timelines are useful signals, not guarantees. Base purchase decisions on features available now, documented compatibility and support you can verify.

  • Which materials produce revenue today, and which are only “nice to have”?
  • Are promised modules or software features shipping now?
  • How much usable work area remains with a rotary or fixture installed?
  • What extraction, cooling and electrical setup does the full system require?
