
Welcome to the world of industrial-grade metal engraving! If you just received your Carverall Z12-60W MOPA Fiber Laser Engraver, congratulations—you now own a true performance monster. Unlike standard fiber lasers, the MOPA architecture allows you to independently adjust the "pulse width." This means you can not only perform ultra-fast metal marking on materials like anodized aluminum and brass, but also engrave brilliant colors on stainless steel and execute high-intensity deep metal engraving.
In this three-part Masterclass series, we will guide you from a beginner to a MOPA laser expert. For today's foundational guide, our goals are simple: quickly assemble the hardware, install the EZCAD2 drivers, master core vector graphic processing, and complete your first flawless flat metal engraving.
Step 1: Minimalist Hardware Assembly & Wiring
The Z12-60W features a modular design. The entire assembly process only requires the 6 included screws and a hex wrench.
- Connect the Ribbon Cable: Firmly connect the control ribbon cable at the bottom of the lifting column to the base of the machine.
- Insert the Column: Insert the bottom of the lifting column completely into the mounting hole on the base.
- Fix the Side Screws: Locate the thicker screws, install them on the left and right sides of the column base, and tighten them initially.
- Tighten the Column: Use the hex wrench to securely tighten all the screws at the base of the column.
- Position the Laser Head: Place the main laser head steadily on the cantilever platform of the column and align it with the mounting holes.
- Lock the First Screw: Tighten the first fixing screw on the laser head and push it inward to lock it completely.
- Tighten Remaining Screws: Install and tighten the remaining fixing screws on the laser head with the wrench. Your main hardware assembly is now complete!
🔌 Wiring & Critical Pre-Boot Preparation
- Peripheral Connections: Plug the included Foot Pedal into the dedicated port on the back of the machine. This will free up your hands during batch engraving. Next, connect the power cord and the USB data cable to your computer.
- Remove the Protective Cover: Before turning on the machine, you MUST remove the black protective cover from beneath the laser lens! If you forget to remove it, the laser will be blocked, and you will not be able to focus or engrave.
Step 2: EZCAD2 Software & Driver Installation (Crucial)
Industrial-grade equipment requires you to manually assign drivers in the Windows operating system. Please follow these software interface screenshots strictly to ensure a stable connection:
- Twist the emergency stop button on the front of the machine to turn on the power.
- Copy the
EZCAD_LITEsoftware ZIP file from the included USB flash drive to your computer and extract all files. - Open the Device Manager in Windows. Locate the unknown laser device with a yellow exclamation mark, right-click it, and select "Update driver." Click "Browse my computer for drivers" and manually point it to the
Driverfolder within your extracted EZCAD folder to complete the installation.

- Double-click
EzCad2.exein the extracted directory to open the software. If the "Red (F1)" and "Mark (F2)" buttons in the bottom right corner are active (displayed in black text rather than greyed out), your driver installation was successful!

Set Language: If you need to adjust the interface language, click
System parameter -> Languagein the top menu. Select your preferred language, click OK, and restart the software for the changes to take effect.
Step 3: Dual Red-Beam Auto Focus
Fiber lasers rely on the "dual red-beam convergence" principle to determine the focal length. Thanks to the Z12-60W's motorized lifting column, finding the perfect focus is effortless.
- Place the metal piece you want to engrave flat on the worktable. (We recommend starting with a scrap piece of anodized aluminum or stainless steel).
- Press the Up or Down buttons on the front panel of the machine to adjust the laser head's height.
- Observe the red light shining on the metal: when you see the two red dots merge completely into one intensely bright red dot, your focus is perfectly set!

Step 4: Creating Text & Importing Vectors in EZCAD
Fiber laser engravers are often used to engrave complex vector logos rather than just plain text. Regardless of the graphic type, the final step must always be the "Hatch" (Fill) operation, otherwise, the machine will only engrave a hollow outline.
Option A: Create Text
- Click the "F" (Text) icon on the left toolbar, click inside the workspace, input your desired text, and then click "Apply" on the left panel.

Option B: Import Vector Files
- Click the "Import Vector File" icon on the left toolbar (supports formats like PLT, DWG, AI, DXF) to load your logo into the software.

Mandatory Operation: Graphic Hatching (Fill)
- Select the text or vector graphic you just created, and click the "H" (Hatch) icon on the top toolbar. In the pop-up window, check "Enable".

Expert Tip (Cross-Hatching): For a cleaner and deeper fill, you can switch the fill type. Next to the Type setting, you will usually see a default "bow-shaped" icon. Click this icon to toggle through the available patterns until you switch it to the Cross-Hatch pattern. Keep the Line Distance at 0.01mm. This creates a highly precise grid fill for a perfectly smooth finish.

Step 5: Parameter Settings & First Engraving
After processing your graphics, we need to input the processing parameters in the Marking Control panel on the right side of the software.

*Note: The following are recommended starting parameters for flat metal marking. Actual results may vary slightly depending on the specific metal material and surface finish.
Basic Metal Engraving Settings
- Speed: 2000 - 3000 mm/s
- Power: 70%
- Frequency: 100 kHz
- Line Interval: 0.01 mm (Modified in the Hatch settings window)
💡 Core Physics: The Relationship Between Frequency and Energy
In a MOPA laser machine, the higher the Frequency value, the weaker the peak laser energy released in a single pulse; conversely, a lower frequency yields stronger explosive pulse energy. If your marking is not deep enough, besides increasing power and decreasing speed, lowering the frequency is a critical adjustment technique.
Preview & Mark
Once the parameters are set, click Red (F1) in the bottom right corner. The machine will project a red bounding box on the material to indicate the exact engraving position. After confirming placement, click Mark (F2) or press the Foot Pedal to begin engraving!


🛑 Pro Tip: Safety & Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting - No Laser Output? If the software is running but the laser isn't firing, double-check that the black protective lens cap has been completely removed from the galvanometer scanner.
Safety Protocol: Never leave the machine unattended while it is operating. Once you have finished engraving, press the emergency stop button and turn off the main power supply to ensure equipment safety.
