Z12-50W Relief Masterclass (Part 1): Quick Setup, RK-CAD Drawing & First Engraving
Welcome to the world of advanced metalworking! If you have just received your Carverall Z12-50W Fiber Laser Engraver, congratulations. This 50W powerhouse not only delivers blazing-fast 2D flat marking but is also your ultimate tool for exploring metal deep engraving and 3D relief work.
In this three-part "Z12-50W Relief Masterclass" series, we will guide you step-by-step to unlock its full potential. For today’s foundational guide, our goals are simple: quickly assemble the hardware, master core graphic processing (including drawing) in the new RK-CAD software, and successfully complete your first basic metal engraving.
Step 1: Minimalist Hardware Assembly & Wiring
The Z12-50W features a modular design. The entire assembly process only requires the 6 included screws and a hex wrench.
- Connect the Ribbon Cable: Firmly connect the control ribbon cable at the bottom of the lifting column to the base of the machine.
- Insert the Column: Insert the bottom of the lifting column completely into the mounting hole on the base.
- Fix the Side Screws: Locate the thicker screws, install them on the left and right sides of the column base, and tighten them initially.
- Tighten the Column: Use the hex wrench to securely tighten all the screws at the base of the column.
- Position the Laser Head: Place the main laser head steadily on the cantilever platform of the column and align it with the mounting holes.
- Lock the First Screw: Tighten the first fixing screw on the laser head and push it inward to lock it completely.
- Tighten Remaining Screws: Install and tighten the remaining fixing screws on the laser head with the wrench. Your main hardware assembly is now complete!
🔌 Wiring & Critical Pre-Boot Preparation
- Peripheral Connections: Plug the included Foot Pedal into the dedicated port on the back of the machine. This will free up your hands during batch engraving. Next, connect the power cord and the USB data cable to your computer.
- Remove the Protective Cover: Before turning on the machine, you MUST remove the black protective cover from beneath the laser lens! If you forget to remove it, the laser will be blocked, and you will not be able to focus or engrave.
Step 2: Install RK-CAD Software & Driver Environment
To perfectly support 3D relief functions, the Z12-50W is equipped with professional RK-CAD software. Please strictly follow these steps to complete the software and driver initialization:
- Twist the emergency stop button on the front of the machine in the direction of the arrows to turn on the power.
- Copy the files from the included USB flash drive to your computer's local drive. You will see the main
RK-CAD.exesoftware and environmental dependency programs. - Before opening the software, please double-click to install the drivers and runtime environments (such as
vcredist_x64.exeandWinPcap4.1.3.exe) located in the installation folder to ensure your computer correctly recognizes the machine.
- Once the environment installation is complete, find
RK-CAD.exe, create a desktop shortcut, and double-click to open it. If the software enters the main interface normally without error prompts, your machine connection is successful!
Step 3: Three-Point Red-Beam Auto Focus
This advanced Z12-50W fiber laser utilizes a highly precise "three-point red-beam convergence" system to determine the exact focal length. Thanks to the motorized lifting column, finding the perfect focus is effortless.
- Place the metal piece you want to engrave flat on the worktable.
- Press the Up or Down buttons on the front panel of the machine to adjust the laser head's height.
- Observe the red light shining on the metal: when you see the three red dots align and merge completely into one intensely bright red dot, your focus is perfectly set!

Step 4: Drawing, Text & Importing Vectors in RK-CAD
As a powerful professional software, RK-CAD not only supports importing files, but its left toolbar also provides rich drawing tools like lines, curves, rectangles, circles, and polygons. Note: Whether you are drawing shapes, inputting text, or importing vectors, the final step must ALWAYS be the "H (Hatch/Fill)" operation, otherwise the machine will only engrave a hollow outline.
Option A: Draw Basic Shapes (Rectangles & Circles)

Draw a Rectangle: Click the "Rectangle icon" on the left toolbar, click and hold the left mouse button, and drag in the workspace to draw a rectangle box. Once drawn, you can precisely modify its dimensions (such as specific length and width values) in the parameter panel in the lower-left corner of the interface.

Draw a Circle: Click the "Circle icon" on the left toolbar and drag your mouse in the workspace to draw a circle. Next, draw another circle of a different size. To turn them into perfect concentric circles, simply select both circles and modify their "Center" X and Y coordinate values to be exactly the same in the lower-left parameter panel. (Tip: Select both concentric circles together for the next "Hatch" step, and you will engrave a beautiful solid ring effect!)

Option B: Create Text (Add Text)
- Click the text icon marked with "A=" on the left toolbar. Enter your desired text in the pop-up text setting window, and then click confirm.

Option C: Import Vector
- Click the "Import Image" icon in the top toolbar. It supports importing common vector formats such as PLT, DWG, AI, and DXF.

Mandatory Operation: Graphic Hatching (Text Fill)
- Select the graphic, text, or imported vector you just created, and click the "H" (Fill) icon in the top toolbar.
- For standard flat engraving, you generally do not need to modify many parameters. Just ensure the Line Spacing is set correctly (usually defaults to 0.005mm, adjustable down to 0.001mm for finer results) to complete the solid fill processing.

Step 5: Parameter Settings & First Engraving
After completing the graphic fill, we need to input the processing parameters in the Mark parameters panel on the right side of RK-CAD.
*Note: The following are recommended starting parameters for standard flat metal marking. Actual results may vary slightly depending on the material.
Basic Metal Engraving Settings
- Speed: 2000 - 3000 mm/s
- Power: 100%
- Frequency: 30 kHz
- Line Interval: 0.01 / 0.005 / 0.001 mm (Modified in the H Fill settings window)

Preview & Mark
Once the parameters are confirmed, click the Preview/Red Light button at the bottom of the software. The machine will project a red bounding box on the material surface to indicate the engraving position. After confirming the graphic is within the material's bounds, click the Marking button or press the Foot Pedal to start engraving!

🛑 Pro Tip: Safety & Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting - No Laser Output? If the software is running but the laser isn't firing, double-check that the black protective lens cap has been completely removed from the galvanometer scanner.
Safety Protocol: Never leave the machine unattended while it is operating. Once engraving is complete, please press the emergency stop button and turn off the main power supply to ensure equipment safety.
